Kia ora from Community,

What an exciting start we’ve already had to the club season with some fantastic action on the field!
Close margins have been setting the scenes, as well as big wins gearing us up for a thrilling season of grassroots rugby.

If the first two weekends out on the paddock are anything to go by, the calibre of rugby we are about to enjoy this winter is high. Whether it's nail-biting finishes, brilliant team play, or standout individual performances, it's clear that club rugby is alive and kicking here in Canterbury. We can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds!

Thank you to everyone involved for making it all possible and working tirelessly to get their teams on the field. The move to Rugby Xplorer for player registrations created a huge amount of extra work for club volunteers so thanks to all those that are involved in this. Your passion and commitment are what keep this game thriving.

Enjoy the read!

Michael Sheat,
Community Rugby Manager

Sideline scoop, it’s all grit and growth!

Club footy is back and the atmosphere around the grounds is buzzing!
It’s been awesome seeing clubs rally around player milestones early in the season. Shoutout to Lance Meikle (Darfield), Jarrod Dalton (Waihora), Luke Palmer, and Jale Masi (Southbridge) for hitting the 100-game mark in Division 1.
A massive congrats also to Steve Lees-Godwin—200 games for Prebbleton, unreal commitment.

Behind the scenes, our Community Rugby team have been implementing and supporting clubs with Rugby Xplorer as well as organising all of the requirements to get our competitions humming. Our Game Developers have been delivering Rugby Smart Masterclasses for coaches, with more Small Blacks courses on the way. Plus, The Coaching Gig app is back, giving junior coaches everything they need to plan engaging and fun sessions.

Our participation team are out and about in schools, pushing to get more Tamariki and Rangatahi into rugby with new initiatives and modified versions of the game! We’ve had plenty of new and returning referees picking up the whistle and officiating pre-season and early comps. Our Associate referee and “You Make the Call” courses are firing up these school holidays, encouraging the community to get involved and providing great way to stay in the game!

We are full of momentum in the women and girls space with four new teams in the Premier Reserve Women’s grade and the pre-season Tens comp kicking things off strong. For our younger wahine, Marist Albion, Merivale Papanui, Sumner and BDI all had their turn in the spotlight at the Matatū vs Chiefs Manawa Super Rugby Aupiki game in the weekend. Brushing shoulders with their heroes for the guard of honour, it’s awesome to provide these opportunities for our girls to play a curtain raiser and be involved at high performance level.

Our upcoming "Girls Have a Go" sessions will give young players a taste of the game and allow them to enjoy a local club experience. We are piloting an initiative from New Zealand Rugby “Contact Ready” at Rolleston College in Term Two with the aim to help girls build confidence in the contact area of the game. There’s also an awesome opportunity for female coaches to connect and learn alongside New Zealand Rugby staff at the Ako Wahine coaching course at the end of the month.

Helping our clubs level up off the field so they can continue to deliver and grow the game long term is a top priority.
Our Club Capability Manager has been doing some vital work supporting clubs in this area, an exciting space to watch!

So get down to your local club, back your teams, and soak in everything that Community Rugby is about.
Let’s keep it positive on the sidelines, we’ll see you out there!

Are you ready to lead from the front?

Building a strong supportive culture and learning what it takes to lead well is vital for any team, be that on a rugby field, office space or any other code. The Crusaders Leadership Program has been designed to support and grow all leaders who are looking to step up their game.

The online based program allows participants to join in wherever they are in the world. It includes working through modules that cover many areas of developing your own successful leadership style, as well as live sessions with legendary Crusaders coaches and players.

Ellesmere Rugby Development Officer (RDO), Nathan Brown completed the two-week program in 2023 and still incorporates learnings in his role today. His main take away being from a Q&A session with Sir Wayne Smith on the topic of what success looks like in terms of satisfaction, “it’s something I bring into working with coaches in the preseason” said Brown, “changing that word slightly – satisfaction, it opens up the world a bit and makes it easier to plan”.

Leadership, growth and building legacies is certainly a focus for any rugby team at any level, but these attributes are also relevant to other working environments. Bronwyn Hawkins, Stuff Sales Director, completed the Crusaders Leadership Program in the November 2024 intake alongside other media and sales staff, as well as an architect and coaches of various codes.  Hawkins’ found the program immensely helpful with the outlook on team environment within her work place, “The culture piece was a really big part of the program, and I think that's one of the biggest successes the Crusaders have got” said Hawkins’, “There are really good things you can take away from it and implement into the business world.”

Results from the program speak for themselves, with 98.8% of participants saying they would recommend to others and 99.1% saying the program “will positively impact my leadership”. Last month a survey was sent to all alumni that had completed the programme at least three months ago with an incredible 92.8% of respondents saying they have changed their behaviour as a result of the programme.

With club season ramping up, Boma, the organisation behind the program are offering a $500 discount to coaches ready to jump on board! Group discounts are also available, so now is the time to dive in and get the most out of your role no matter your experience or career path.
