Welcome from Community

Kia ora whānau, I’ve taken on the role of Metro Operations Coordinator for Junior and Teenage rugby, and it’s great to now play a part in creating the experience we all know and love as Saturday winter sport. Having come from sport activation and delivery, working in the coordination and administration space gives a new perspective on and appreciation for sport.

Our Junior and Teenage competitions are underway with grading rounds starting to wrap up, it’s awesome to see the grades taking shape. In conjunction with our amazing team of Game Developers and Resources Coaches, we have been able to facilitate opportunities for our Tamariki and Rangatahi to grow their knowledge of the game through the delivery of tackle and scrum clinics.

There’s a strong retention of team numbers across several grades, and some growth which is a real testament to the work that our clubs and volunteers are doing in providing positive experiences for players and their whānau. A part of this success is the Year 1 & 2 Rippa Modules that some of our clubs piloted last year and have continued this season. We can’t wait to see the numbers that these facilitate start filtering through into the grades above in the years to come.

All the best for an enjoyable season ahead, we look forward to seeing you out there!

Ngā mihi,

Brydie Washington

Metro Operations Coordinator – Junior & Teenage, Canterbury Rugby Football Union

Around the grounds

Over 650 tamariki were put through their paces last weekend at tackle clinics across Metro, North Canterbury and Ellesmere.

With Saturdays being the highlight of the week for most, we’re also excited to also have a Monday night girls grade up and running. With 6 teams playing at Christchurch in week one and another 6 out at Prebbleton we hope to see this space continue to grow.

25 Years for Lyndon McKendry

Canterbury Rugby recently farewelled Lyndon McKendry after 25 years in her role as Game Developer – Match Officials.

Transferring from the West Coast in 1999 where she was one of the few females refereeing in New Zealand rugby at the time, Lyndon started with Canterbury Rugby and has gone on to become legendary in her role.

The role was Initially charged with growing, educating and developing referees. The role with Lyndon has also included the wellbeing at clubs and judicial system across Canterbury at certain times along with the ballpersons, sideline and match management at Provincial, Super Rugby, National, International games and 2 World Cups.

Lyndon has interacted with all clubs and schools in our region, thousands of volunteers and from March to August each year has been the person on the phone every weekend answering all the refereeing queries that our game delivers plus all of the add ons from her role. As husband Mike quoted “he is definitely the rugby widow in the household”.

“Lyndon has been a major force in Canterbury having the highest number of referees for any province in the country. Lyndon has encouraged and recruited many young and older referees to bring alive their passion for the game. It’s been an amazing contribution that CRFU are very proud of from Lyndon” says Canterbury Rugby CEO Tony Smail.

Lyndon will continue her active involvement with Canterbury Rugby Referees Association as a life member and can be still expected to be seen on the sidelines at club rugby where it all began – welcome to retirement Lyndon, you’ve earned it.

Vibrant cultural celebrations at Southbridge

It was all smiles at Southbridge for their Club & Pasifika Day, alongside some incredible footy! An awesome celebration embracing their community’s culture with the beauty of having all of their teams play at home, bringing out some amazing results and an epic family day out!

Club Manager & RDO Chris McMillan said “The Pasifika community's values of family, community, and respect have positively influenced the club's atmosphere, encouraging teamwork, solidarity, and mutual support among members. Their traditional dances, music, and cuisine have added a colourful and flavourful dimension to club events and gatherings, enhancing the overall experience for everyone involved.”

“Moreover, the Pasifika community's strong sense of identity and pride has helped instil a greater sense of belonging and cultural appreciation within the club. Their presence has expanded the club's networks and connections, creating opportunities for collaboration, learning, and growth” said McMillan.

2024 Bunnings Warehouse NPC and FPC Shorts Partnership

Kiwi owned and operated NHR Group have strengthened their support for provincial rugby, joining forces with Canterbury Rugby ahead of this year’s Bunnings Warehouse NPC & FPC.

NHR Group are the experts in commercial vehicle leasing and rentals with a huge range of trucks, vans, mini buses, and utes, along with a team of specialists well-equipped to address the unique needs of our customers in the South Island.

“As we look to expand and take our brand to other parts of New Zealand, our drive to support provincial rugby has been a key focus from our board and chair, Andrew Ritchie. We saw the partnership as a no brainer, it was a quick and easy partnership for us to form, considering our existing branch in Christchurch.” said Phil Arras, NHR Group Chief Executive.

"Not only is Canterbury Rugby a well-known, trusted organisation, their passion and values are really aligned with ours." Phil went on to say.

Canterbury Rugby’s Head of Partnerships Glen Thawley echoed the alignment between the two organisations and said he’s looking forward to welcoming NHR Group to Canterbury. “They’re an inspiring organisation that want to deliver great service. Their passion for rugby is evident too with their current relationship with North Harbour and soon another provincial union.

Established partners Signbiz will also be seen across the Canterbury’s Bunnings Warehouse NPC & FPC shorts this year, with the Christchurch based sign company increasing their support for Canterbury Rugby, becoming a major partner in 2024.

Canterbury Rugby’s focus on the community and supporting the game at all levels in the community was a big attraction for Signbiz Co-founders Jim Coe and Paul Reeves “We’re all about supporting local teams and making a positive impact in our communities! With our sponsorship programs, we aim to lift up these teams and help them reach their goals while bringing everyone together. When Signbiz gets involved, we’re not just about business.”

From Club to in control for Belfast stalwart

After initially applying to be the Manager of the Canterbury Farah Palmer Cup side, the Belfast stalwart Neil Jackways has since become an FPC, Super Rugby Aupiki and now Black Fern Match Manager all in the past 8 months. “Yeah, I certainly didn’t see this on the horizon a year ago!”

The 40-year-old who has managed countless teams Canterbury,  Belfast, Metro and Waitaha says the chance to play a leading role in such important games is a real, pinch me moment, “It’s been a big learning curve, but an awesome journey, crossing over from team management to match management and I guess being a key cog in the wheel is really exciting, you get a bit nervous the first time, you get a few jitters, but the people around you make it such a cool experience.”

“For me being involved in a sport I’m passionate about is cool. You meet lots of people and when you see them again you just pick up where you left off. It’s awesome!.”

Jackways will have to scamper from Saturdays Captains run at Apollo Projects Stadium to link up with his Belfast Div2 side after the call for help also saw him slip the boots back on in 2024. I’m a bit of a sucker for punishment, but I really love what I do, it’s a great bunch of lads.” Before heading back later in the afternoon to look after Canada for their final look at the stadium before Sundays Test.

“Yeah, it’ll be a heck of a weekend, one I’m sure I’ll remember for a long time.” Jackways finished.

High Calibre Coaches come together for a 1st XV Team

Giving back to the community is a common theme within rugby, and if any team shows the strength in that this season, it’s the Horomaka Combined 1st XV.

Previously captaining the winning 2010 World Cup Black Ferns as well as the Football Ferns, Melissa Ruscoe is joining forces with 2023 Community Coach of the year and ex Crusader, Robbie Freuan, to coach the Horomaka Combined 1stXV team this season.

A teacher at Hillmorton High School for 23 years and playing for her country across two different codes, Ruscoe is well and truly accomplished at being able to bring the best out of these boys.

Initially connecting with Horomaka Combined last year to assist with some skills sessions, Ruscoe was keen to become more involved this season, “It’s about giving back, trying to grow the game but also wanting a safe environment for kids to be able to learn the game and also have a connection with their community” says Ruscoe, “Robbie has done an amazing job with them, and managed to keep most of the boys together from last year”.

Bringing together players from Hillmorton, Middleton Grange, Riccarton and Hornby High Schools to assemble the team, they’re already “forming like brothers” said Ruscoe, “there’s a real whanau feel, it’s really good. That’s what rugby is about”.

Teaming with Freuan as well as Charles Simpson and ex Mid Canterbury player Greg Spence to coach the squad, is about bringing their experience to help these players grow on and off the field, “it’s discipline as well” said Ruscoe, “off the field is just as important, being good humans is first and foremost, going to school and helping whanau”.

Teaching the team to believe in themselves is all part of the role explained Ruscoe “we’re showing them there is a pathway. We’re trying to give them the self-belief of what they can do. They’re a talented group and we’re just trying to give them some foundations if they want to carry on and aspire to other levels, we’re trying to give them the skills and the confidence that can do that”.

Horomaka Combined will take on Rangiora High School in the opening weekend of the Miles Toyota Championship at Hoon Hay this Saturday, kicking off at 1pm.

West Melton turns 50!

In a momentous gathering that reverberated with tradition and camaraderie, the club embarked on a weekend of commemoration and celebration, marking significant milestones and honouring the individuals who have shaped our journey. Friday night heralded a historic occasion as they inducted seven remarkable individuals into the prestigious ranks of life membership. This esteemed honor had been absent from our midst for a number of years, making the evening all the more special.

With great pride, each new life member was presented with a club blazer, a symbol of their enduring dedication and contributions. Among those honoured were Ants Calder, Jock Austin, Phil Hudson, Craig Hale, Al Wood, John Agnew, and although absent in person, Lance Mitchell, each recognised for their invaluable contributions to our club's legacy.

Saturday night brought forth an evening of entertainment and generosity, with past player Simon "Bucko" Buckenham serving as the charismatic Master of Ceremonies. The highlight of the night came with a spirited auction, which surpassed all expectations by raising over $15,000 in support of our club's endeavours. Following the auction, we convened at the newly inaugurated WM Community Centre for a delightful dinner and dance. The atmosphere was further enlivened by the reunion of local band The Muppets, who came together specially for the celebration, filling the night with nostalgia and joy.

Throughout the weekend, the celebration was enriched by the voices of past and present members who shared their stories and reflections. Guest speakers Sir Graham Henry and Mike Cron regaled us with anecdotes and engaged the audience in a lively Q&A session, leaving us with smiles and memories to cherish. As the weekend drew to a close, our beloved Sulkies took to the field for a final match against the Rolly Rebels, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that defines the club. In a touching gesture, the Sulkies provided the meal for the occasion, allowing the ladies to enjoy a well-deserved rest on Mother's Day, a fitting end to a weekend filled with unity and appreciation.

Looking back on the clubs history, we are reminded of the bonds that unite us and the memories that endure. Through moments of recognition, laughter, and shared experiences, we reaffirm our commitment to the values that have guided us throughout the years. Here's to the next 50 years of camaraderie, community, and countless memories yet to be made.

Helping coaches thrive with IntaSport

With an eye to making coaching easier for our hundreds of volunteer coaches, Canterbury Rugby is utilising a user friendly one stop coaching mobile app Intasport. The app features coaching videos, plans, and valuable information to help make kids experiences better and take some of the stress out of designing and organising training sessions.

“Our coaches do an amazing job,” said Canterbury Rugby Game Development Manager Michael Sheat. “But they’re often time poor, so this is a way to help make their experience more enjoyable as well as the kids.”

“The app's content highlights modern coaching approaches that engage young people in rugby, emphasising fun and development. This alignment is a pivotal factor in Canterbury Rugby’s decision to use IntaSport.” Sheat Added.

We encourage all junior coaches to download and start using the app so they can enjoy the benefits it provides.
