Lam ready to take starting opportunity

Burnside’s Joel Lam has had to be patient in his first Bunnings NPC season, but will be rewarded for his efforts with his first Canterbury start against Otago on Saturday, adding another bow to an already impressive 2022 season for the young halfback.

A product of St Andrew’s, Lam has also represented the Crusader and New Zealand Under 20’s, with Canterbury the next stepping stone and one that has always been a dream for the Christchurch local.

“It’s always been something that I have pushed for” said Lam, “being a Canterbury boy, you’ve always grown up wanting to play for them, to now do it and be in the facility is a little mind blowing!”

Joining other halfbacks Mitchell Drummond and Willi Heinz in this year’s NPC squad, Lam has had the opportunity to pick the brains of the experienced duo.

“I’ve definitely grown a lot over the season, learning a lot from two guys with international experience.” said Lam, “It’s been really good being under their wing and taking everything from them.”

A key part of Lam’s role this season has been staying ready, ensuring he is ready for when his moment comes, the first of which being this weekend.

“I’ve been making sure I nail my preparation and staying ready as anything could happen with COVID or injuries” Lam said.

“That’s something too with finals coming up, making sure I am ready if required, and having the chance this weekend to get a starting cap will help my confidence moving forward.”
