Calder making the most of Canterbury opportunities
The St Andrew’s junior has made the most of his opportunities this season, being used across both sides of the scrum and making his mark when called upon.
“It’s a childhood dream to play for Canterbury” said Calder, “It’s really special to be involved with this group and it’s been an awesome experience so far.”
Playing in the front row, Seb has enjoyed having the chance to learn from experienced veterans, with the likes of 108-test All Black Owen Franks, Crusader Oli Jager and Highlander Daniel Lienert-Brown all in the 2022 squad.
“I certainly thought a few years ago that I wouldn’t be in this position, let alone being teammates with someone like Owen Franks. I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can of him and the other props and I’m pretty grateful for that opportunity.”
The youth and exuberance of players such as Seb and other New Zealand U20 teammates such as George Bell and Joel Lam have helped create a unique environment in Canterbury this season, with the team currently top of the Odds conference after 6 games.
“It’s a really cool environment and it’s quite a different culture from other teams I have been a part of.” Calder said, “It’s a fun environment that everyone gets along in and it makes you feel really welcome.”
Calder has already got a Crusaders cap to his name, featuring for the Super side against the Western Force this season, while the prop was also a member of the victorious New Zealand Under 20’s side, a couple of facts that leave you with no doubt in your mind that this is a young prop with a big future ahead of him.
Calder starts on the bench this weekend against Northland, with the NPC team looking to continue their current form and maintain their spot at the head of the ladder.
