  • Canterbury Rugby in partnership with the New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association (NZRPA) and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) are looking for a new Personal Development Manager (PDM). This is a contract role for 24 months working approximately 32 hours per week (0.8FTE) and is based in Christchurch, New Zealand.

    This position is part of the NZRPA and NZR’s Personal Development Programme (PDP). The Programme’s focus is to equip, empower and support players in their personal and professional growth.

    In this role you will be responsible for coordinating and leading player education and development across the key pillars of the programme. This includes areas such as working alongside players to co-construct individual growth plans that progress their educational qualifications and career prospects outside of rugby, equip and empower players to manage their career as a professional rugby player and further grow their personal skills, and support them with their wellbeing. This will involve you facilitating group learning opportunities, coordinating sessions with subject matter experts, as well as working with players individually.

  • Canterbury Rugby invests a significant amount in Player and Coach Education and to deliver our programmes we have a pool of Resource Coaches who work across the province on a part-time contract or casual basis. 

    We are currently recruiting for our 2025 programmes and are seeking expressions of interest for a variety of roles, covering both specialist skills coaches as well as those who are available to assist in Primary School Activation Programmes.

    This work will typically be during the hours of 4pm-8pm on weekdays.

    Areas available to work in:

    • Aid and assist in specified NZRU/World Rugby coaching courses.

    • Help deliver programmes and events/festivals to promote the engagement of our young people to rugby.

    • Assist in the delivery of high-quality coaching sessions to clubs, schools and community groups, including holiday programmes and primary school activations.

    • Assist in up-skill opportunities for coaches 

    • Assist with planning and implementing player development sessions as appropriate.

    • Promote player health and welfare initiatives such as concussion management and side-line behaviour.

    Knowledge and skills requirements:

    • Sports Coaching or Education Experience. 

    • Ability to self-drive within the local area.

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively liaise with players, coaches, administrators and other stakeholders.

    • Strong organisational skills.

    Police Vetting will be required to be completed by all successful applicants.

  • This is not just rugby; this is Canterbury Rugby. Be a part of the change, growth, and development of participation at Canterbury Rugby. Join us in fostering a love for rugby among new participants and play a vital role in their journey with the sport. Support the Participation Lead in delivering engaging and fun rugby-based sessions for school-aged children in a safe and inclusive environment.

    This work will primarily be during school hours supporting work with Primary Schools.  There will also be some evening and weekend work available.

    Key Responsibilities

    Lead and deliver sessions to groups of tamariki or assist in delivery or sessions with schools or key stakeholders which could include: 

    • Delivering rippa-based ‘have a go’ sessions focusing on ripping, passing, and catching to schools. 

    • Facilitate engaging rippa-rugby based games and activities at key stakeholder events in a rotational format.

    • Attend tournaments and actively assist in any CRFU tournaments and events. 

    • Be available over the weekend to help run a club set-up on club days.

    Lead one school through the Tākarokaro Programme, which could include: 

    • Engage with a school to introduce them to the Tākarokaro Programme. 

    • Clearly communicate the programmes objectives and expectations to schools. 

    • Organise and distribute equipment for schools to use throughout the programme. 

    • Assist in fostering connections between schools and their local rugby clubs to build strong community relationships. 

    • Support schools through the creation of games and the delivery of the end-ofprogramme festival.

    Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required: 

    Essential:

    • Experience coaching or working with children in a sports or educational setting

    • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage, inspire, and motivate tamariki. 

    • Demonstrate patience, adaptability, and a positive attitude when dealing with tamariki. 

    • Be effective in leadership and organizational abilities. - Ability to work collaboratively in a team when required.

    • Enthusiasm for rugby and a passion for community engagement. 

    • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively

    Preferred:

    • Familiarity with Rippa Rugby rules and techniques, including passing and catching. 

    • First aid certification a preference but not mandatory 

    • Background or qualifications in Physical Education, Sports Coaching, Sports Science or any other relevant sport degree or certificate. 

    • Be flexible to work some evenings and weekends as required.
