Canterbury have suffered their first defeat of the season, coming off second best to top-of-the-table Wellington on Saturday evening. Wet and windy conditions at Westpac Stadium resulted in a scrappy battle and multiple scrum resets and penalty goals meant the game never felt like it flowed.

Canterbury’s seven try victory over Waikato

It was a hurting Waikato side that turned up at Canterbury’s AMI Stadium on Thursday night, having lost the coveted Ranfurly Shield to Otago in their previous match. But they were hurting even more by the time Canterbury were finished with them, suffering a 47 – 10 point defeat.

Canterbury wear down gutsy Tasman

It was, as they say, a game of two halves. Tasman did their best in the first half of the game to mark the 40th anniversary of their 13-6 Ranfurly Shield win over Canterbury (in 1973) with another upset. But the red and black visitors scarpered any such hopes in the second half, eventually outplaying Tasman with three tries to two.
