- Monday 25th November 2013
The Canterbury Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams have both beaten southern rivals to take out the Southern Regional Tournament in Timaru this weekend.
Canterbury men, coached by Chris Neill and Jason Tia Tia, lost their first round robin game to Tasman but won the next four against Southland, South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury and Otago to enter the final at the top of the table. They faced Southland in the final and beat them 33-17.
Canterbury women, coached by Ernie Goodhue, qualified for the final in second place after beating Tasman, South Canterbury and Southland but losing to Otago. Canterbury and Otago then faced off in the final and the result was virtually a reverse of their round robin game, Canterbury winning this time by 29 points to 7.
Both teams will now compete in the National Sevens Tournament in Rotorua on 11 and 12 January 2014. The top five teams in the Men’s category and the top three teams in the Women’s category qualify.
The Central region will have its qualifying tournament on 7 December in Palmerston North, followed by the Northern region in Hamilton on 14 December.
